Tradition Bearers Concert

13:00 - 15:30

The “Tradition Bearers” Concert celebrates the variety and richness of traditional song across the UK and sometimes further afield. Generally the singing is unaccompanied and the range of songs and styles showcases the diversity of the singers influences and sources.

This year's Tradition Bearers will be:

Jarlath Henderson

The youngest ever winner of the BBC Young Folk Award, back in 2003, Tyrone-born multi-instrumentalist and singer Jarlath Henderson has since won further acclaim in his firebrand partnership with Scottish piper and whistle player Ross Ainslie. Whilst well known as a Piper, his solo debut, “Hearts Broken, Heads Turned” comprised bold yet sensitive arrangements of traditional songs.

Ellie Beaton

Originally from Rothienorman, Aberdeenshire Ellie was brought up surrounded by traditional music and ballads, both Traditional and Bothy. She enjoys sharing her North-East heritage and love of Doric through her songs. She is a regular at Stonehaven Folk Festival and we are delighted to have her as a Tradition Bearer this year.

Arthur Watson

Arthur is originally from Aberdeen and he has been steeped in the music and song of North-East Scotland from an early age.  Arthur was also a member of the Aberdeen based group The Gaugers. He has a huge repertoire of songs, funny, sad, bawdy but especially the North East Bothy ballads. He is a fine singer and whistle player with his own distinctive style and a particular enthusiasm for the older ballads.

Lucy Donaghey

Lucy Donaghey grew up at the foot of the Sperrins in County Derry. She now lives in Inishowen. Her love for traditional singing stems from her father and grandfather. She is a member of both the Inishowen and Derry Traditional Singing Circles. More recently she has co-founded the South Derry singing circle with her father to promote and preserve the tradition around her home place.
